Home to one of America's most historic Temples and a thriving Jewish community.

Greetings!

Shalom. Welcome to the Temple B'nai Sholem's web site. Thank you for seeking information about our Congregation. We hope you enjoy your virtual visit and we look forward to seeing you in person at one of our Temple events. Please click through the topic tabs above for more information About Us, Calendar of Events, Worship  and Study opportunities and our Community .

Our congregation is over 100 years old. Our Temple was built in 1908, is located in New Bern's beautiful Historic District, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our 121 members come from 76 households from six coastal counties. Our services are conducted by lay leaders and are followed by a fellowship hour for refreshments and schmoozing.

Our Mission

The mission of this congregation is to cultivate the tenets of Reform Judaism through prayer, worship, study, fellowship and good works. In pursuit of this mission, we commit ourselves to ongoing innovation, seeking new challenges and continually evaluating our progress and results. We commit ourselves to building and sustaining an environment necessary to realize our mission.

Oneg Hostesses Needed

For the love, caring and respect we have for our synagogue it is a pleasure to participate in the Friday night onegs. We need the entire congregation to do their part in signing up for an oneg. It is a wonderful happening at the end of a service to be able to visit and speak with each other and partake of some refreshment. Please call or see Vera or sign up at services for available dates. If you would like to have the privilege of doing an oneg but can’t find the time to do so, perhaps you would care to make a small donation so that the refreshments can be purchased for that evening in your honor as host and hostess.

Sincerely,

Vera Horowytz

President's Message - Marc Harris

Dear Temple family,

We all have Tzuris in our lives. I am not here to complain, but to explain. My wife’s mother recently passed away, my own mother has recently been hospitalized for long term care, my business is struggling, and yes, I have been feeling sorry for myself.

Like I said, I am not here to complain. I am merely sharing my own personal experiences. I know we all have problems. Tragically, there have been too many deaths and way too many illnesses in our congregation and its extended family recently.

During the past few months I have had some very dear friends say to me, “let your friends be your friends.” I wasn’t sure exactly what that meant, other than a nice cliché, a generous sentiment of an emotional outstretched hand or spiritual hug, if you will.

But every time a member or friend called me, or I contacted someone to see how they were doing, I realized more and more what it actually meant. It is the very essence of our Synagogue. I always thought that we come together on the Sabbath to pray for ourselves and our own families. Yes, I know we all share in the Mishebeirach and mention our friends and relatives names, but to be painfully honest, I thought I was coming for myself. To heal myself and ask for blessings for my own family. I never thought if it was selfish, I just assumed it was natural, and as long as I showed up at services, I was doing the right thing.

But now I get it. Yes, while we do receive personal healing and personal spiritual growth, it is because we are there together. WE are the family. Our congregation as a whole. By letting everyone else into our own lives, and offering to be a part of theirs, THAT is our “friendship”. When someone helps us, we heal a bit. When we help someone else, we also heal a bit. Because we hopefully helped heal them.

So I conclude by repeating by what these very wise people have advised me. Let your friends be your friends. We are here for you, and never be afraid to reach out and ask for, or offer, help, love or guidance.

L’Shalom

Temple News

Press releases to publicize our schedule of High Holiday Services will be sent to area media in mid August with a follow-up mailing on September 1. We will be sure to include the newspapers that serve the military community at Cherry Point, New River Air Station and Camp Lejeune.

Here’s some very exciting news! Our temple will be participating in New Bern’s “ghost walk” this year on Friday October 29 from 5:00-7:00 pm and on Saturday October 30 from 5:00-9:00 pm. If you would like to participate as a tour guide please let me know. We will be recruiting volunteers after the high holidays.

High Holy Days Food Drive

Once again we encourage you to bring packaged and/or canned food items to Temple for our neighbors in need. The food pantries, sponsored by Religious Community Services in New Bern and by Fishes and Loaves in Pamlico County, have been most appreciative of our congregation's donations. Please drop off your food donations in the bins in the Temple foyer as you attend services this holiday season. Thank you!

Thank You Notes

A big thank you to all the adults and children who participated in our Cemetery Clean Up Day on March 14. Thanks too to all the folks who prepared food for our covered dish luncheon held at the Temple following the activity. The caring and cooperation exhibited made for a happy and memorable day.

Jacob Stern, Chair

As newcomers to New Bern we were searching for a Jewish connection and found Temple B’nai Sholem. The cordiality we met touched our hearts.

The approaching Passover season had filled me with trepidation, but we were thrilled to hear a Community Seder was planned and we were pleased to attend. That ritual dinner was one of the MOST enjoyable of my life. It was so well planned and executed. I particularly enjoyed the service conducted by Victor Schiff. His introductory remarks set a tone for the rest of the evening.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this event outstanding. The atmosphere has been so “haimishe” that we look forward to being part of it.

Nina and Jerry Tamber

I want to thank you for donating an amazing 63 pairs of shoes to the Soles4Souls organization! We should be proud of our community for the ease with which we give to of our time and our money and our resources to help those in need.

With gratitude,
Shannon Rubin
