Chevra Kadisha and Cemetery
In 1877, the Hebrews of New Bern purchased land and consecrated it as a Jewish cemetery. At the turn of the century,  a congregation was formed; and, eventually ownership of the cemetery was transferred to the Congregation. Of approximately 100 graves, names and dates are discernible on all but two stones. Remains of sixteen veterans are buried in our cemetery.

Deceased non-Jewish spouses of Jewish members may be interred in our cemetery. Burial of cremated remains is allowed as long as the ashes are in a suitable container and not scattered . Families planning to place a full-length slab stone on a grave must use a grave liner at the time of burial so that the stone will not be damaged when the ground settles. Flowers may be planted at graves.

As of May 1, 2003, grave and urn site prices were:

4' x 12' plot for 1 grave

$350 for  members plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100

$400 plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100 for non-members

8' x 12' plot for 2 graves

$500 for members plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100

$600 plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100 for non-members

12' x 12' plot for 3 graves

$600 for members plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100

$700 plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100 for non-members

2' x 2' urn site

$200  plus a one-time maintenance fee of $100

Burial Instructions Form
Our congregation has never had a full-time rabbi. For many years, we did contract for part-time services of a rabbi, but have not done so for the past several years. During this time without a rabbi, we have utilized the services of volunteer lay leaders for conducting worship services, visiting the sick, visiting the incarcerated and assisting with funeral or memorial services. Several members have preplanned their funerals and have requested that our lay leaders conduct their services. As a result, our Board of Trustees has authorized the formation of a Chevra Kadisha Committee (Jewish burial society) to assist our members in going as far as they wish to go in observing Jewish traditions during a terminal illness or at times of death, burial or mourning. In order for this committee to be ready to serve Temple members, it would be helpful if members who may want assistance from the committee would complete this form.
